Newport To Screen 60+ Films During June Festival

The Newport International Film Festival, to run June 10 – 15 in Rhode Island, has announced a line-up of more than 60 domestic and international films to screen during this year’s fest. The opening night selection is Sony Pictures Classics’ “Once Upon a Time in the Midlands,” directed by Shane Meadows and starring Robert Carlyle, Rhys Ifans, and Shirley Henderson. Special screenings during the fest will include Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini’s “American Splendor,” Thaddeus O’Sullivan’s “The Heart of Me,” Carles Bosch and Josep Maria Domenech’s “Balseros” (Cuban Rafters), and Tom Peosay’s “Tibet: City of the Snow Lion.”

There will be competition films in both feature and doc categories. Features in competition will be “Valentin,” “EvenHand,” “Coney Island Baby,” “Detective Fiction,” “Dummy,” “The Housekeeper,” and “The Magdelene Sisters.” Docs vying for the prize are “Cleaning Up!,” “Un’Ora Sola ti Vorrei” (For One More Hour With You), “Pull Out,” “Shelter Dogs,” “Speedo,” and “The Same River Twice.”

The newport fest will also screen the documentary works-in-progress “Monkey Dance.” Animated works and shorts will also be screened. New programs for this year’s event include “Row Your Boat” family programming, “Portu-Voz,” a section of Portuguese-language films, the “Great Directors: First Features” retrospective, and “Song on Celluloid,” covering movie musicals.
