After its debut in Cannes, Clint Eastwood‘s “Mystic River” is set as the opening-night film for the 41st New York Film Festival. The film, making its North American premiere at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall on October 3, stars Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Kevin Bacon, Laurence Fishburne, Marcia Gay Harden, and Laura Linney. Warner Brothers will open the film theatrically on October 10.

Eastwood previously brought his film “Bird” to the NYFF in 1988, and he was honored with a career achievement award at the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s gala tribute in 1996. “It is always an honor and a pleasure to welcome Clint Eastwood back to the Festival,” said Richard Pena, chairman of the NYFF selection committee and program director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center. “Watching the film, one is immediately struck by his brilliant yet always subtle control over every aspect of the cinema; Clint Eastwood is one of cinema’s true masters, and ‘Mystic River’ will surely be seen as one of his greatest works.”

The film, is based on Dennis Lehane‘s best-selling novel about three working-class friends in a Boston neighborhood who deal with several acts of violence over the years. Brian Helgeland (“L.A. Confidential”) wrote the adaptation. Robert Lorenz, Judie G. Hoyt, and Clint Eastwood produced the film, a Malpaso production that will be presented by Warner Bros. Pictures in association with Village Roadshow Pictures and NPV Entertainment.

The New York Film Festival, sponsored by Grand Marnier, will run October 3-19. The full lineup of films will be announced in late August.
