DancesWithFilms 2003 has unveiled plans for its festival with over 90 films slated to screen, including its July 25th opener “Pledge of Allegiance” by writer-director Lee Madsen. The festival prides itself on being, according to its web site, “a film festival where an audience can actually ‘discover’ films that aren’t set to be released next week.” The unknown filmmaker and their unknown cast are tantamount at this event.

“Pledge of Allegiance,” is described in a fest announcement as “set in Carson City, Nevada — four high school friends led by Mac, the star quarterback, are wannabe gangsters that drink, gamble, fight and fix school sports games. The lure of easy money eventually forces Mac to choose his allegiance to his friends against his personal interests.” In all, DancesWithFilms will world premiere over 50 features and shorts, with an additional 25 West Coast premieres.

“The Americans are Coming! The Americans are Coming!” will also world premiere at the fest out of competition. The film is a 2003 road trip film in which five broke Americans journey through Europe on a first-class holiday by posing as a team shooting a documentary. And psychological thriller “Undermind” by first timer Nevil Dwek will screen July 28th. According to a release, the film asks, “What would happen if I woke up as someone else?” In addition to features screening in and out of competition, the festival will host four groups of competition shorts and two “fusions short series” groups.

“We have the highest of expectations from this slate, our strongest ever,” festival co-creator Leslee Scallon commented in a prepared statement. The festival takes place through July 31st at Laemmle’s Monica 4-Plex in Santa Monica.
