Wellspring announced that it has acquired all worldwide rights (except U.S. television) to director Liz Garbus’ documentary “Girlhood.” The film was shown in some theaters briefly in August for an Oscar-qualifying run. Now Wellspring plans a theatrical release this fall, starting at New York’s Quad Cinema on October 29, moving to Los Angeles in November and other cities soon after. Wellspring plans to license the film internationally as well. “Girlhood” will be available on video and DVD in spring 2004, and also it will air on cable channel TLC next year.

The film follows two young girls, Shanae and Meghan, whose lives of crime resulted in their arrivals at Waxter Juvenile Facility in Maryland. At age 10, Shanae was gang-raped by five young men, and ended up stabbing a friend to death by age 12. Meghan went from foster home to foster home until she tried to harm another child with a box cutter.

“‘Girlhood’ has been one of those films which is a true labor of love — everyone who has worked on it has given of themselves and their time for many years because of their passion for the project,” said Garbus, the Oscar-nominated director of “The Farm: Angola, USA.”

Wellspring’s head of acquisitions Marie Therese Guirgis discovered “Girlhood” while attending the Atlanta Film Festival in June. It has garnered audience awards at the South by Southwest and Nantucket Film Festivals. It also won the Atlanta Film Festival’s jury award.

Other forthcoming Wellspring releases include “Crimson Gold” by Jafar Panahi, “Father and Son” by Alexander Sokurov, and “29 Palms” by Bruno Dumont.
