Holiday Numbers Are Solid for New Indie and Specialty Films

The Christmas holiday weekend saw the debut of a number of new indie and
specialty films and the expansion of a few awards hopefuls. While “Lord of
the Rings”
and “Cold Mountain” drew crowds at multiplexes, smaller films
like “The Company,” “The Fog of War,” and “Monster” drew in moviegoers in
their opening limited runs.

Holiday hours no doubt led to fewer companies reporting grosses to indieWIRE
this week so Newmarket’s debut of “Monster” is not seen on the indieWIRE:
BOT which tracks film in limited release (figures are provided directly to
indieWIRE by the distribution companies on Mondays). The film, which opened
in 4 theaters over the weekend, made more than $85,000 over the weekend,
according to websites that track box office that would give the movie an
average of more than $21,000 and a total so far of about $100,000. It will,
of course, continue to expand over the next few weeks and is expected to get
a boost if Charlize Theron’s powerful performance is recognized by awards

Sony Pictures Classics has two films at the top of the indieWIRE: BOT. Errol
doc about Robert McNamara topped the iW: BOT with $58,137 on 5
screens for a per screen of $11,627 and a cume of $134,118 so far.
Meanwhile, the latest film from Robert Altman, “The Company,” made $93,776
on 11 screens for an average of $8,525 and a total of $128,270 so far.
Sony’s “The Statement” and “The Triplets of Belleville” also placed in the
top ten.

Fox Searchlight’s “In America” made more than $1 million in its expansion to
325 screens this weekend. The film had an average of $3,295 and has made $3
million so far.

While Focus did not report grosses, its release of “21 Grams” expanded to
291 screens, according to web-based box office figures. The film had an
average of about $4,200 so far and has earned a total of about $4.7 million.

Lions Gate remains busy with its awards hopefuls “Girl With a Pearl Earring”
and “The Cooler.” “Girl” made $188,756 for an average of $7,260 and a new
total of just under $500,000, while “The Cooler” made $308,756 for an
average of just over $4,000 and a new total of almost $1.2 million.

Opening tomorrow is Hou Hsiao Hsien’s “Millennium Mambo” from Palm Pictures;
the acclaimed Chinese film from Taiwan debuted in competition at Cannes in
2001. indieWIRE writers and editors named “Mambo” the top film without
distribution back in that year.
