The weekend brought few new specialty offerings to theaters. Two docs, however, opened in limited release. Empire rolled out its docs on designer Yves St. Laurent in New York, while Lantern Lane Entertainment debuted “Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer” in Gotham and L.A. Newmarket, meanwhile, expanded its feature, “Monster,” which is based on the life of Aileen Wuornos, starring Charlize Theron.

The iW: BOT tracked forty films, down three from the previous weekend. The overall gross jumped to $5.1 million from $4.8 million last week. The total number of screens with specialty titles also increased from 1,242 to 1,542.

Empire Pictures opened two docs on French fashion designer Yves St. Laurent titled “YSL: His Life and Times” and “YSL: Avenue Marceau 75116 Paris” hitting the box office runway with a $21,595 gross and this week’s highest per screen average. The films played one screen at Film Forum but may have been out grossed by Gillo Pontecorvo’s “The Battle of Algiers,” however figures were not reported for that film which also played at Film Forum in New York.

Newmarket expanded its Golden Globe nominated feature “Monster” by Patty Jenkins, adding 68 screens (82 total) taking in $844,026 and a stellar $10,293 per screen average. So far, the film has cumed over $1.4 million.

Sony Classics added one screen to its limited release of “The Fog of War,” grossing $59,973 on seven screens and an $8,568 per screen average. The film is ranked third on the iW: BOT, and has cumed $373,342 since release one month ago. The film company maintained Robert Altman’s ballet pic “The Company” on 11 screens, grossing $62,998 ($5,727 average), ranking sixth on the chart. Since its release last month the film has earned $$415,715.

Lantern Lane Entertainment opened its doc about Aileen Wuornos on three screens hoping to cash in on the “Monster” gravy train. The film grossed $16,158 for a moderate $5,386 per screen average. “It’s a little less than we anticipated,” commented Lantern Lane’s David Garber to indieWIRE yesterday by phone. “It’s still respectable given the weather and the football games that were playing [during the weekend.” Garber was referring to the sub-zero temperature readings that hit New York and the entire Northeast over the weekend. Garber said the company plans to open the film in San Diego and Atlanta on January 23rd, followed by a roll out in San Francisco and Chicago planned for January 30th.

Next weekend, Wellspring opens Iranian feature “Crimson Gold” in New York, while United Artists will roll out Afghan film “Osama” in Los Angeles and New York. Also opening in the two cities is Japanese animation film “Tokyo Godfathers” from Samuel Goldwyn Films.
