Koch Lorber Films has acquired its first film for theatrical release, Lars von Trier and Jorgen Leth‘s critically acclaimed documentary “The Five Obstructions.” The company acquired both theatrical and DVD rights.

In the unusual collaboration, von Trier recruited famed Danish filmmaker Leth to make five remakes of one of his early short films, “The Perfect Human” but each time Von Trier made him work with a different set of obstacles and limitations (incorporating animation, shooting only in Cuba with no crew, etc.). Koch Lorber calls it “a unique investigative journey into the phenomenon of filmmaking.”

The film has played to strong response at festivals including Toronto, Venice, and Sundance. Koch Lorber said it would make the film available to select festivals and arts centers prior to its theatrical premiere at New York’s Film Forum on May 26. (It will then open in select national markets). Preview dates for the film are planned for festivals including AFI’s SilverDocs in Maryland and the San Francisco Film Festival, and it will also play at the Film Comment Selects series at Lincoln Center, at the Wexner Center in Columbus, Ohio, and several other venues and festivals. The DVD release is planned for early fall 2004.

Koch Lorber’s Richard Lorber negotiated the deal with Rikke Ennis on behalf of Trust Films of Denmark.
