The Global Film Initiative has acquired Bosnina director Pjer Zalica‘s “Fuse,” which will screen at the upcoming New Directors/New Films series presented by MoMA and the Film Society of Lincoln Center, the cinematic foundation announced yesterday. The film, which garnered the best Bosnian director award at the Sarajevo Film Festival as well as the Silver Leopard last year at the Locarno International Film Festival, is set in the small picturesque Bosnian town of Teanj, which is beset with huge underlying social fractures following the break-up of Yugoslavia.

Festering internal wounds, however, surface after U.N. authorities arrive in the village with news that President Clinton would like to visit the town to accept the ‘honor’ of being a citizen. Teanj is then faced with dealing with democratizing in one week against the backdrop of continuing ethnic tensions, corruption and crime leaving the populace in a frenzy. “The universal themes in “Fuse” are punctuated by humor, and reflect an authentic voice from Bosnia’s conflicted history,” commented Global Film chairperson Susan Coulter in a release. “The Initiative is proud to include this compelling new story in our growing library.”

The Initiative’s interest in the film reflects the organization’s mission to “support original filmmaking in the developing world that makes use of the power of local storytelling traditions, as well as filmmaking that displays innovative use of the cinematic medium.” In addition to the acquisitions program, Global Film Initiative also organizes grants, distribution and education programs.
