The next few days may be Memorial Day Weekend to everyone else, but it’s “Cinemania Weekend” to us in Austin. What that means, is local legendary theater the Alamo Drafthouse and local legendary punk club Emo’s have teamed up for an onslaught of film and music. The schedule has been modified a bit, taking what was going to be an all-outdoors weekend event back into the clubs (weather forecasts are calling for rain).
Unfortunately, this means some of the musical acts (Sebadoh, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, etc.) are to be postponed, but the movies are still on. Basically, that means a great double feature Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night. First, it’s Better off Dead and Napoleon Dynamite tonight. Enough great things cannot be said about Napoleon Dynamite. With a fear of sounding overzealous, it’s about to become a cult classic in every sense of the word.
Saturday night pairs Mario Van Peebles’ Baadasssss and Foxy Brown with a live appearance by Antonio “Huggy Bear” Fargas. Then, Sunday night has a double-bill between Escape from New York and then an all-out orgy, also known as The Warriors. This isn’t just any kind of Warriors screening, it’s a cast reunion featuring a chunk of the memorable faces from one of the best B-movies of all time.
It should be a memorable weekend, at the very least. I’ll be rotating between Cinemania, some time on the lake, and working on a story I’m flexing for the Austin Chronicle about the recent downward spiral of the Tower Records chain. Memorable and memorial.
