Today’s initial estimates for the nationwide expansion of “Fahrenheit 9/11” show that the film may have earned up to $8.2 million on Friday. That’s according to Brandon Gray’s BoxOfficeMojo site. As of early yesterday evening, Variety estimates put the number at between $6 – $8 million for Friday’s debut.
The trade paper had predicted earlier in the day, citing industry sources, that the movie would make just $10 million over the entire weekend. Meanwhile, my quick informal poll of folks yielded weekend estimates ranging between $13 – $23 million for the opening weekend (Fri – Sun).
Before seeing the film at the jammed AMC Empire 25 in Times Square last night, I spoke with two folks from indie distribution companies who predicted, based on early numbers, that the film could make $30 million this weekend. That theater added post midnight showings to accomodate demand for the film.
