In my preparation for next week’s Montreal trip, I’m checking out some of the films and events that are happening for Comedia, the film-screenings portion of the Montreal Just For Laughs Festival.
There are some cool things on the schedule, including a bunch of what seem to be promising shorts. A couple of them – The Climatic Death of Dark Ninja and I Am Stamos – screened at SXSW 2004. But a good deal of them are fresh and new. And, of course, a lot of them are Canadian. In fact, I’m anxious to check out some of the French features as well as shorts. I’m hoping to discover some great films that we can maybe include in one of our special shorts programs for SXSW 2005.
It looks like the films screen in the evening, with the daytime pretty much open. There are some parts of the Just For Laughs Festival up and running, including a live reading from the Family Guy cast as well as an appearance by Triumph the Insult Comic Dog.
This should be fun. The American equivalent – the Aspen Comedy Arts Fest – happens like two weeks before SXSW, so I’m never able to attend. It will be nice to check out a comedy fest, as well as one that is trying to branch out with film offerings.
… I just checked the weather forecast, and it looks like it will be in the 60s the whole time I’m in Montreal. Considering it’s averaging in the 90s every single day in Texas, this will make the trip worth it, in and of itself. So, weather shouldn’t be a problem. Though, I don’t speak French at all. So I’m gonna have to practice the French translations of: “I don’t speak French” and “I’m an ugly American.” That should get me through just fine.
