I leave the country for one weekend, and look what happens… Ricky Williams is retiring from football? According to Sports Illustrated, this is the case, as the Miami Dolphins star player is calling it quits after only five seasons in professional play. I just had to write about this before going to bed. I’m still kind of shocked, and not sure what to think. This is like Wes Anderson retiring from filmmaking after releasing The Royal Tennenbaums. I mean, what’s going on here?
A lot of us in Austin feel a definite kinship with Williams, especially since he won his Heisman trophy while playing for the University of Texas (I was finishing up film school at the time). His sister, Nisey, was one of my best writers when I was an entertainment editor at the university paper. So, it comes with that kind of history that I’m not sure if this announcement is a bold and brave move, or really, really premature. I don’t know. Is it part of his documented social anxiety disorder? Or, is he just satisfied to be a multi-millionaire in the prime of his life? Or, is it both?
All the while, news also comes that Eddie George is joining the Dallas Cowboys. I guess good news comes when bad news goes. Eddie George, formerly of the Tennessee Titans which is formerly the Houston Oilers (my favorite football team growing up), is essentially returning to Texas. I’m excited, and this should start making up for the loss the Dolphins and the NFL will feel with Ricky gone.
