here! Films Nabs Day’s “Straight-Jacket”

here! Films has acquired worldwide rights to Richard Day‘s “Straight-Jacket,” the company confirmed Thursday. The film, set in Hollywood in the 1950s, is the story of a sexy male movie star who marries an adoring studio secretary to try and hide his love for a man. Richard Day (“Girls Will Be Girls”) wrote and directed the movie, which will screen at Los Angeles’ OUTFEST this weekend. Here! will release the film in theaters this fall.

The film, produced by Michael Warwick, who worked with Day on “Girls,” stars Matt Letscher, Carrie Preston, Veronica Cartwright, Adam Greer, Jack Plotnick and Michael Emerson. It is based on an off-Broadway play by Day.

“Richard Day has put together an amazing film that evokes and pokes fun at those wonderful ’50s bedroom comedies. We are extremely pleased to add this immensely entertaining movie to our line-up of 2004 theatrical releases,” said Mark Reinhart, EVP of distribution & acquisitions at here! Films. Reinhart negotiated the pact with rep Steven Raphael of Required Viewing and Irwin Rappaport.

The film is the fourth recent acquisition for here! Films, following deals for Ekachai Uekrontham‘s “Beautiful Boxer,” Franco Zeffirell‘s “Callas Forever,” and Andrew Litvack‘s “Merci Docteur Rey.” Other films in the company’s library include “Sordid Lives” and “Showboy.”

here! Films is a division of here! TV, which was formed by Regent Entertainment‘s Paul Colichman and Stephen Jarchow in 2002. here! TV, aimed at queer audiences, is available in more than 22 million households via satellite and soon via iN DEMAND pay-per-view.
