This past November, I was in L.A. and stopped by Chris Gore’s house for an afternoon. My visit there ended up lasting several hours, as Gore’s office is equal parts amusement park and clubhouse.
One thing that he showed me was a test pilot for an upcoming game show he was scheduled to host for IFC. It was called Ultimate Film Fanatic. Now, test pilots for celebrity-based programming are always interesting because they never have the actual celebrities, just paid no-name actors standing in for them. In the case of Ultimate Film Fanatic, the celebs are a panel of judges that evaluate the show’s contestants, and there’s no need to even come close to resembling the real people. In fact, I think a woman was portraying Crispin Glover.
Anyway, the show’s formula worked great, and it left me entertained… and a little shocked. It’s basically American Idol for film buffs. I would say that’s the easiest way to describe it. It’s a competition between fanatics from around the nation, dueling it out over who knows more movie trivia or who owns the cooler movie memorabilia. Totally in his element, Gore is a great host.
Well, fast forward over six months later, and now Ultimate Film Fanatic is set to debut on IFC this week. Be sure to check it out. Plus, like American Idol, the show is going across the country this summer to find future contestants. Will this be the beginning of a game show classic? I guess we’ll find out, starting Friday night.
