Santa Monica-based First Independent Pictures has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Andrew Gurland and Huck Botko‘s “Mail Order Wife” (formerly “Mail Order Bride”) the recently formed company’s founder, Gary Rubin, announced last week. The film, executive produced by Hypnotic co-fouders Doug Liman and David Bartis, is slated for release on February 11th. It stars Eugenia Yuan (“Charlotte Sometimes”), Adrian Martinez (“Pieces of April”) and Gurland (“Frat House”) and is about a single Queens man who tires of the dating scene and decides to order a wife from a catalogue of Asian women. Sweetening the deal is a filmmaking team who agree to pay the expensive fees involved so that they can document his experience, but when his beautiful bride arrives surprises are in store.

“‘Mail Order Wife’ is unlike any other film I have seen,” said Rubin in a statement. “It is a film that defies genre. It has everything a modern moviegoer is looking for: laughs, social commentary, a compelling story and tons of surprises.”

Formerly executive vice president of sales and acquisitions at Artisan Entertainment, Rubin formed First Independent at this year’s American Film Market, in February.

The boutique outfit services both the theatrical and ancillary markets with the intent to distribute four to six films per year and focuses on pre-buying domestic rights to feature films, while acquiring finished films, as well as selectively providing prints & advertising and finishing funds. First Independent is also releasing Kristoffer Tabori‘s “Pursued” starring Christian Slater, Michael Clark Duncan, and Estella Warren.
