After more than 50 years in business on the corner of 49th St. & 11th Ave. in Hell’s Kitchen, the Munson Diner was boarded up recently.
The small, fading chrome Munson Diner, a Kullman-designed structure, was a popular spot for anyone seeking a quick, low-cost meal. Over the past ten years that I lived down the block from the diner I would pop in regularly, and there was almost always a cab parked outside with the driver grabbing a coffee, a quick meal, or using the pay phone. While certainly not a classy place for a meal, the Munson was the reliable, friendly spot at the end of the block that never closed.
