Today was a very big day for my friend Aldo. Aldo’s been a friend through junior high and high school. He was valedictorian of our high school and then went on to Stanford. My most vivid memories of Aldo are just us talking for hours about music, especially Bjork or David Bowie. Well, Aldo works at Google. And, while he’s not at liberty to chat about specifics, he definitely has a wildly profitable financial interest in the company’s recent stock market presence.
I was chatting with Aldo on and off today, and it seems like the atmosphere at Google headquarters is relatively calm. I would be bouncing off the walls if I had stock options trading as well in such a strange market. But not Aldo. He was calm and cool. I guess it helps that Ben & Jerry’s was supplying ice cream to the staff. They always have the best perks. The week ends with the coincidentally scheduled third annual staff picnic. I asked Aldo if he’s gonna go out and really celebrate once the weekend hits. He’s gonna pack for his upcoming move to San Francisco. When I asked about the longer commute, he pointed out that Google has a staff shuttle, with mobile wireless included. Pretty cool.
A bunch of us high school friends are meeting up in Detroit for a wedding in a few weeks. I say Aldo’s buying the drinks. What would be the ingredients in a drink called “The IPO?”
