THINKFilm has announced that it will release Niels Mueller‘s “The Assassination of Richard Nixon.” The film stars Sean Penn, Naomi Watts, Don Cheadle, and Jack Thompson. Described by THINKFilm as a fact-based drama, the film debuted at Cannes this year as part of the festival’s official selection; it will screen as a special presentation at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival next month and open in theaters at the end of December to qualify for awards consideration.

The film, based on the true story of Samuel Bicke and set during the Watergate scandal in 1974, is the story of a man whose life takes a downward spiral when he separates from his wife and ends up working for a dishonorable businessman.

“Sean Penn is his generation’s greatest actor, and ‘The Assassination of Richard Nixon’ may just be his greatest performance yet,” said Mark Urman, THINKFilm head of U.S. theatrical distribution, in a prepared statement. “With stunning clarity and control, Penn, Mueller, and a brilliant cast have taken a forgotten incident from America’s past and have turned it into a strikingly contemporary look at where we could be headed today. They have succeeded in making Sam Bicke’s story immediate, touching, and terrifying.”

Jorge Vergara and Alfonso Cuaron‘s Anhelo Productions produced the film, they are the same team behind Cannes’ 2004 entry “Chronicas” and the recent hit, “Y Tu Mama Tambien.” Leonardo DiCaprio, Alexander Payne, Frida Torresblanco and film co-writer Kevin Kennedy are executive producers.

THINKFilm president Jeff Sackman and company SVP of acquisitions and business affairs Randy Manis negotiated the deal with Joe Drake, president of Senator International, which is handling the film’s international sales.
