Neal Fredericks: 1969 - 2004

nealcamera.jpg“Blair Witch Project” DP Neal Fredericks, who died over the weekend, will be buried in Los Angeles tomorrow. Tragically, Neal was killed in a plane crash while shooting a new movie in Florida, Daniel Zirilli’s “Cross Bones.” The last time I hung out with Neal was in November, we were in the Bahamas, at a film festival where he and Daniel Zirilli were screening their previous project, “The Stonecutter.” We crossed paths a few times over the years in Orlando and at various fests. While I can’t say I knew him that well, it was great to see him down in the Bahamas at what turned out to be a really strange, disorganized festival. Even so, Neal was enthusiastic and as friendly as ever. After the fest we traded emails and he joked to me that a brief mention I made about the movie in my iW fest wrap would get more attention than the whole festival.

The Haxan guys have set up an online forum where fans and friends can share thoughts. Neal’s funeral will take place tomorrow at Noon at Westminster Memorial Park, 14801 Beach Blvd. in Westminster, CA. For those unable to attend in person, an online gathering is being planned for the same time.
