Random Movie Thoughts: 'Walk Don't Run'

What is the deal with Cary Grant in Walk Don’t Run (1966)? Cary Grant obviously deserves to be the one flirting with Samantha Eggar’s character until you realize: A. he’s married and B. she’s gonna get with Jim Hutton’s Olympic athlete guy. But what? He’s Cary Grant and he was looking really good for his age. Nevertheless, in his last film role, Cary Grant played cupid instead of the romantic lead. It’s hard to buy this, in an otherwise entertaining film. Also, it’s a cool movie to watch in the middle of all our own, current Summer Olympics hoopla. Using the 1964 Tokyo Olympics as a backdrop, this relationship comedy is a pretty entertaining look at fish out of water and lovers destined to be together.

But, I mean, c’mon! How can we believe that Samantha Eggar wouldn’t rather be with Cary Grant? He’s Cary Grant! He’s the epitome of the romantic lead. The epitome of cupid? That would be someone like Jack Lemmon. Or, hell, Jim Hutton.
