Palm Pictures has acquired Sebastián Cordero‘s “Crónicas,” which debuted earlier this year in the Cannes Film Festival‘s Un Certain Regard section and will screen at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival. Palm will release the film, a Spanish-language crime and suspense thriller starring John Leguizamo, in the second quarter of next year in theaters, followed by a DVD release. “Crónicas” was produced by Anhelo Productions, producers of “The Assassination of Richard Nixon,” set for release by THINKFilm and also to be screened in Toronto.

In the film, John Leguizamo stars as Manolo Bonillo, a Miami reporter who travels to Ecuador to cover a series of murders by The Monster of Babahoyo. Cordero’s script received the Sundance/NHK award for best Latin American screenplay and also stars Leonor Watling, Alfred Molina, and Damián Alcázar. Palm has also acquired the film’s soundtrack, featuring music by Antonio Pinto, who created music for “City of God.”

“We are thrilled to be working with Sebastián, Alfonso, Jorge, Frida and the Anhelo team. We hope to get Crónicas out to the largest audience possible,” said Palm Pictures’ David Koh in a prepared statement. “Cordero is a real talent and this is a breakout role for Leguizamo.” Alfonso Cuarón added in a statement, “Sebastián Cordero has crafted a film very relevant to our time. The moral struggle makes us question who is the real monster, Manolo, The Monster of Babahoyo, or the system that creates them.”

“Crónicas” was produced by Alfonso Cuarón, Guillermo Del Toro and Jorge Vergara through Anhelo Productions, with Bertha Navarro and Isabel Dávalos. It was executive produced by Frida Torresblanco.

The deal was negotiated by David Koh, head of acquisitions & production, Chris Blackwell, chairman, and Steven Lehrhoff, COO, for Palm, along with Cinetic Media and Cuarón, Vergara, and Torresblanco of Anhelo Productions.
