RESFEST Set for 8th Annual Event, Launching Worldwide Tour in New York

Traveling media festival, RESFEST, will launch its eighth annual installment for the first time in New York City from September 9 – 12 at the TriBeCa Performing Arts Center. The festival, which showcases short films, music videos and animation through screenings, parties, workshops and live music programs, originally would kick-off its world tour each year in San Francisco, where it will take place at the Palace of Fine Arts from September 30 – October 3 following its stay in Boston at the Brattle Theatre from September 17 – 19.
Activist short films are among the programs featured this year in honor of the election season. “BUSHWACKED,” a specially curated program of politically-oriented material, will include work from Bryan Boyce, Michael Moore, The Yes Men, and Guerrilla News Network and more. Highlights include an animated “Schoolhouse Rock-style” interpretation of recent U.S. foreign policy in the world premiere of Eric Henry‘s “Pirates & Emperors (Or Size Does Matter)“; the world premiere of Grady Hall and Mark Hoffman‘s “Pinocchio“; “Waking Life” animators Jason Archer and Paul Beck‘s “Clean Sweep” and “Homeland Hodown“; and Simon Robson‘s award-winning “What Barry Says.”
Also slated this year is a retrospective of director Jonathan Glazer‘s (“Sexy Beast”) work, three collections of international shorts, and “By Design,” a program of experimental design film. Music video selections include program titles “Cinema Electronica,” “Videos that Rock,” and “Warp Vision,” a showcase of 15 years of videos from electronic label, Warp Records.
Other programs slated for New York include an acoustic performance from the U.K.’s Mojave 3 with Thomas Campbell‘s feature film, “Sprout.” RESFEST will also host tours to leading Gotham design and film companies as well as a “Meet the Filmmakers BBQ.” Closing the event will be a video performance from artists Emergency Broadcast Network (EBN) and their British-based contemporaries, Hexstatic.
“We are excited about starting this year’s tour in New York City for the very first time,” commented RESFEST festival director Jonathan Wells in a statement. “The expanse of our festival program in New York is a testament to the vibrancy of the creative scene in the city.”
RES Media Group was founded in 1996 with the mission to “entertain, educate and inspire a global audience with a multitude of media.” In addition to Boston, the event will travel for the first time this year to Austin, Singapore, Zurich and Dublin as well as a full U.K. tour. Resfest will again make stops in Los Angeles (October 13 – 17 at the Egyptian Theatre), Toronto (October 22 – 24 at the Royal Cinema), Chicago (December 3 – 5 at the Museum of Contemporary Art), and Tokyo (November 20 – 23 at the Laforet Museum, Harajuku) in addition to more than two dozen cities worldwide.
