U.S. rights to legendary director Jean-Luc Godard‘s “Notre Musique” have been acquired by Wellspring, the company officially announced yesterday. The film, which will open on December 22nd at New York’s Film Forum followed by a nationwide rollout, premiered in May at the Festival de Cannes, and will screen at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival as well as the New York Film Festival in October. Marie-Therese Guirgis, Wellspring’s head of acquisitions, negotiated the deal with Carole Baraton on behalf of Paris-based sales company, Wild Bunch.

“Notre Musique” is described by Wellspring as a “mesmerizing, witty and lyrical reflection on 20th century Europe, war, Middle East turmoil, the cinema, and Godard himself [who] continues to draw lines between past and future.” The film is divided into three sections, or “kingdoms”: Hell, Purgatory and Paradise, which Godard views as “three co-existing states, with Paradise conceived as being guarded by the U.S. Marines.”

“This film could not be more timely or more welcome,” commented Guirgis in a statement. “‘Notre Musique’ is a reflection on the ravages of war and a tribute to the indestructible nature of beauty by one of the greatest artists of our time.”

Wellspring, a division of American Vantage Media Corporation, opened Vincent Gallo‘s “The Brown Bunny” theatrically, and the company will open Cedric Kahn‘s road thriller, “Red Lights” this weekend. Upcoming releases include Tsai Ming-liang‘s Venice prizewinner “Goodbye Dragon Inn,” and Jonathan Caouette‘s Sundance 2004 favorite “Tarnation.”
