R.I.P. Rodney Dangerfield

R.I.P. Rodney Dangerfield

What a bummer. Rodney Dangerfield was really a comedian’s comedian. Not only did he pave the way for so many of today’s top comics through his regular TV specials, but he managed to stay funny as he got older.

Along with George Carlin, Dangerfield was one of the stand-up comics that really introduced me to that whole world, to that whole industry. Like a lot of people in my generation, I owe my father for that.

Sure, maybe some of his movie choices weren’t that great. But how can you deny the comedy brilliance of Caddyshack or the charm of Back to School?

And onstage, he was incredible. Sure, his whole schtick was “No respect, no respect at all…” but at least he had some funny stuff to back it up. He was really one of the great masters of the one-liner. As a bit of a tribute, here are some of his classic lines:

– “I remember the time I was kidnapped and they sent a piece of my finger to my father. He said he wanted more proof.”

– “I was such an ugly baby… My mother never breast fed me. She told me that she only liked me as a friend.”

– “During sex, my girlfriend always wants to talk to me… Just the other night she called me from a hotel.”
