Calling “The Aviator” Martin Scorsese’s “Citizen Kane” is a fitting description for this new film. It is a striking achievement for a director who has a career of exploring the troubled lives of tortured men. Rounding out my own Top Ten for 2004 are (in alphabetical order): “Bad Education”, “Bright Leaves”, “The Corporation”, “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”, “Maria Full of Grace”, “Mean Creek”, “Super Size Me”, “Tarnation”, “Vera Drake”.
