Samuel Goldwyn Films has joined forces with Sony Pictures Entertainment to acquire the worldwide rights to Noah Baumbach‘s “The Squid and The Whale.” The Sundance ’05 debut won Baumbach both the best director prize and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance this year.

Goldwyn is partnering with Sony’s Screen Gems division, which led the negotiations for the Hollywood studio. As part of the deal, Goldwyn is taking the lead on the North American distribution of the film, while Sony Pictures Releasing International will lead the distribution in international territories.

Baumbach’s film, set in Brooklyn in the mid 1980s, stars Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney as a couple that have recently broken up, leaving their kids (Jesse Eisenberg and Owen Kline) to cope with the changes in the family. Co-stars include Anna Paquin and William Baldwin.

“Noah has created a remarkable picture,” said Samuel Goldwyn Jr. in a statement. “One that is tender, funny and ultimately moving. We’re elated to be working with Noah on this film and we know it has something in it that will touch everyone who sees it.”

The company intends to release the movie this fall.

Meyer Gottlieb, President & Peter Goldwyn, Head of Acquisitions, for Samuel Goldwyn Films negotiated the deal with Greg Johnson and Peter Newman of Gotham Sales banner, in conjunction with attorney Donna Bascom and Baumbach’s manager, Brad Gross. Meanwhile, Benedict Carver, Screen Gems’ SVP of Acquisitions and Co-Productions handled acquisition for Sony.

The film was produced by Wes Anderson, Peter Newman, Charlie Corwin, and Clara Markowicz. The executive Producers are Reverge Anselmo, Miranda Bailey, Andrew Lauren, and Greg Johnson.
