The hottest issue in Austin this weekend is the vote taking place Saturday, May 7, for the proposed Smoking Ban. Many local bars feature signs like the one above to try and persuade Austinites to vote against the ban. In short, Austin’s famous live music scene could soon adopt the kind of laws you find in bars of New York or L.A., where folks have to exit a pub to have a cigarette.
Austin Chronicle reporter Daniel Mottola chats with some Austin bar owners about why the smoking ban may not be such a bad idea.
Meanwhile, my music colleague Darcie Stevens, writes in the Chronicle about how this ban could potentially harm many of Austin’s beloved music venues.
