Five New Albums Worth Your Dime

Five New Albums Worth Your Dime

1. Various Artists, Hippocamp Ruins Pet Sounds (Try to find this incredibly unofficial/unathorized remix album of the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds, while you can. It’s leaving Web sites as quick as The Grey Album did. What you’ll find when you get it, is a highly intoxicating collection of underground producers remixing and reimagining the psychedelic energy of the Beach Boys classic. Summer sunshine beats, trance breaks, and drum ‘n’ bass populate the crisp harmonies.)

2. Stephen Malkmus, Face The Truth (The Pavement frontman’s third solo release finds him experimenting and jamming even more than before. How far can he deviate from the Pavement model? Listen to this high energy indie rock freak-out and find out.)

3. Mike Doughty, Haughty Melodic (Former Soul Coughing leader’s new solo work finds him sounding like a smarter Dave Matthews or a calmer Beck. Gone are his old band’s trip-hop leanings, in favor of a bonfire acoustic style that can probably win over folks who don’t like bonfire acoustic styles.)

4. Edan, Beauty and the Beat (The underground hip-hop party album of the month. This cut-and-paste collage takes completely unknown and otherworldly samples, marrying them with tight rhymes. It’s a carnival of sounds, toys, and rap production skills. Think Paul’s Boutique, as done by Jurassic 5.)

5. Okkervil River, Black Sheep Boy (This Austin outfit makes their breakthrough masterwork. Fearless leader Will Sheff is the master painter behind these dark and toxic tales that sound so vintage, they’re almost classic. There’s a good reason why they’ve become the “next big thing” of the Austin indie rock scene.)

BONUS TRACKS:
– “The Violet Hour” by The Clientele (Sounds like a beautiful indie pop song recorded under the ocean… instead, it’s really a catchy throwback to shoegazing’s heyday. Catch this band when they open for Spoon this summer.)

– “Brighter Than Sunshine” by Aqualung (The best Coldplay song that Coldplay never wrote.)
