Kirby Dick‘s “Twist of Faith“, which screened in competition at Sundance this year and was later nominated for an Oscar for best documentary, will be released theatrically after it airs later this month on HBO.

Artistic License has announced its acquisition of the film, launching the theatrical release of the documentary in New York on July 1, following the June 28th premiere on the HBO cable network.

The film is the story of Toledo, OH firefighter Tony Comes, confronting his past in which a Catholic priest sexually abused him.

After opening in New York and San Francisco next week, the film will debut in Minneapolis, MN the following day, head to Tucson, AZ on July 8th, and open in Los Angeles on July 22nd.

“I’m thrilled to be working with Kirby on the release of this important film,” said Artistic License Films president Sande Zeig, in a statement. “Tony Comes and his wife Wendy move everyone who sees the film to reexamine what they thought they knew about the subject. In many states, legal maneuvering to prevent disclosure of abuse by priests is still a breaking news story.”

Kirby Dick, and longtime producer Eddie Schmidt, run Chain Camera Pictures, an L.A. based production company. Previous films include “Derrida,” “Chain Camera,” and “Sick: The Life & Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist“.
