The First Thursday

The First Thursday

The first Thursday of every month in Austin, there’s an event called (surprise, surprise) “First Thursday.” The restaurants, shops, and clubs of South Congress Avenue open themselves up and basically create a sort of South Austin block party. Here are some images from this month’s “First Thursday:”

(A family zydeco band performs in front of storefronts and shoppers.)

(Local merchants set up tents with their handmade products, some selling sno cones.)

(Near a row of parked motorcycles, Austin-based filmmaker Brad Beesley hangs out in front of popular South Congress taco bar, Guero’s. Brad’s documentary on rock band The Flaming Lips, The Fearless Freaks, was just released on DVD.)

(Outside the South Congress Cafe, a musical couple playing flute and accordion try for tips as more Austinites make their way down the avenue.)

(A portable art museum/old school bus sits along Congress, as folks take a look at the paintings inside.)

(At nearby Mexican restaurant Polvos, some of the patrons put on their Latin dancing shoes as the house band jams the first Thursday night away.)
