"C.R.A.Z.Y.", "3 Needles", and "Whole New Thing" Win Multiple Awards At Atlantic Film Fest

The Atlantic Film Festival in Nova Scotia announced the winners of its 25th edition over the weekend with Jean-Marc Vallée’s “C.R.A.Z.Y.” a multiple award winner at the event. The film won the festival’s People’s Choice Award and the award for Best Canadian Feature honor, a $2,000 cash prize. Winner of the award for best Canadian feature at the Toronto International Film Festival last week, the film was described by fest organizers as a “wildly entertaining film (that) is an ambitious and magical cinematic homage to the pop-culture-saturated middle class of the seventies.”

Thom Fitzgerald’s drama “3 Needles” took two prizes including the fest’s award for best director and the Ed Higginson Cinematography Award for Tom Harting. The award includes $12,500 CAD in equipment and services. The film focuses on three individuals in different cultures who make a pact with the devil to survive a global epidemic.

Amnon Buchbinder’s comedy “Whole New Thing” received both the Outstanding Writer’s Award (shared by Buchbinder and Daniel MacIvor) as well as the Outstanding Performance by an Actor – Male prize shared by Daniel MacIvor and Aaron Webber. “Whole New Thing” also won an “Excellence in Editing” prize for Angela Baker, which includes a $500 cash prize to Baker, and $10,000 in services to Buchbinder. Kristin Bell received the best actress prize for her role in Michael Melski’s “Focus Group Therapy.”

In other prizes, Tim Wilson’s “The Last Weir” took the Best Atlantic Short Film prize, which includes $5,000 in services. The Excellence in Art Direction award went to Kevin Pitman for “Copain de Paris” with $500 cash presented to Pitman and $10,000 in services to the film’s director. The same awards were given to Greg Hemmings for “Rubaricon” and Darren Fung’s “Little Claus & Big Claus” for sound design and music composition respectively.
