Katrina Relief in Austin

Katrina Relief in Austin

This morning, the first of an expected 5,000 Louisiana residents arrived at the Austin Convention Center seeking shelter. Anyone who has attended SXSW knows the Convention Center well, as it is our annual headquarters. Starting today, though, it becomes a headquarters for hurricane relief. I made my way to the Convention Center today to donate items and help out.

(Signs set up on the Trinity Street side of the Convention Center. All kinds of cars pulled up to drop off all kinds of donations. Bedding and pillows were abundant, so that the hurricane victims would have somewhere to sleep.)

By 2:00 p.m., the Red Cross was declining any new volunteers for the day. But, in cities like Austin, Houston, and the rest of the area, volunteers will be needed throughout the coming weeks and beyond. I urge anyone available to lend a hand through this aftermath.
