“Constant Gardener” and “Good Night, and Good Luck” Bookend Upcoming 49th London Film Festival

"Constant Gardener" and "Good Night, and Good Luck" Bookend Upcoming 49th London Film Festival

The Times BFI London Film Festival, one of Europe’s largest public film events, recently announced the lineup for its 49th edition. The festival will showcase over 180 feature films as well as an international array of documentaries, animation and experimental works. Fernando Meirelles, who received four Oscar nominations for his 2002 film, “City of God,” returns to the festival with “The Constant Gardener.” The film will open the festival, which runs October 19 – November 3.

“The Constant Gardener” stars Ralph Fiennes as a mild-mannered British diplomat struggling to solve the murder of his activist wife (Rachel Weisz), who had questioned the pharmaceutical industry’s actions in Kenya. The film, which will have its U.K. premiere at the festival, was adapted from a John le Carre novel of the same name.

Among the many films making their European or U.K. premiere is Takeshi Kitano‘s (“The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi“) “Takeshis.” The film is about two radically different Takeshi Kitanos who happen to cross paths one day. Gabriele Salvatores‘s (“I’m Not Scared“) “Quo Vadis, Baby?” — about a private investigator who decides to examine her sister’s suicide some 16 years earlier – will also screen. Another feature will be Steven Soderbergh‘s “Bubble,” which observes the blue-collar residents of a small Ohio town where a murder takes place.

Good Night, and Good Luck,” directed by George Clooney, will be the festival’s closing film. The movie chronicles broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow‘s investigation into and exposure of Senator Joseph McCarthy‘s anti-Communist tactics. David Strathairn (“Blue Car“) plays Murrow alongside Patricia Clarkson (“The Station Agent“), Jeff Daniels (“The Squid and the Whale“) and Robert Downey Jr.
