When I ran into filmmaker Brad Beesley at the Austin City Limits Music Festival last month, he was happy to share that things were just about done with the long-gestating feature, Christmas on Mars. The feature-film project has been a collaboration in-the-works for years with psych-rock band The Flaming Lips. Today, in Billboard, Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips comments on what he and fans can expect from the final film. Says Coyne:
“I’m thinking of taking it to theaters and having it be an experience where we bring in giant sound systems, smoke machines, Christmas lights, s*** falls on you from the ceiling and you can smoke pot and do whatever you want. There’s something about the communal experience while something intense and unexpected is happening. I’m sure it will come out on DVD and there’ll be a soundtrack, but that isn’t the real experience.”
