At Saturday’s UT Longhorns football game against the Kansas Jayhawks, it was another blistering victory for Austin’s home team. But, besides the 66-14 score, there was another important event. The UT Women’s Athletics Hall of Honor inducted six new members. The ceremony was Friday and the inductees were honored again, during the game (well, during a break in the game) on Saturday.
What many didn’t fully realize is that one of those six women is an award-winning documentary filmmaker. Shola Lynch, class of ’92, was a Track & Field champion long before she made a name for herself in the doc world last year with the film Chisholm ’72: Unbought & Unbossed. The documentary, her first feature, premiered at Sundance in 2004 before a festival circuit that included SXSW, LAFF, IDFA, and more. Plus, she was nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards for the film. It’s currently available on DVD, from 20th Century Fox.
Shola called me up to remind me she would be in town, so we grabbed some drinks at the Driskill with a group of folks:
