Shorts and Sweet

Shorts and Sweet

On Saturday, a group of SXSW programmers gathered for our first of many weekend programming meetings of the season. This time, it was for the Narrative Shorts category. These meetings are great, because they allow a core group to review the contenders, comment, debate, and get a better sense of what submissions we will select for SXSW 2006. I’m happy to report that, based on this meeting, we’re gonna have some very good shorts at the festival in March. I won’t go into detail – many of the filmmakers do not yet know whether their film is selected – but take my word for it.

Saturday’s meeting also marks the beginning of the whirwind. There’s no turning back now. We’re going to start spending almost every weekend, between now and March, watching and watching and discussing and watching. With our early deadline (Nov. 14) just behind us, and our final deadline (Dec. 5) around the corner, the mailbox is full every day at the office. We’re receiving more submissions than ever before this year, and it’s exciting.

But for now, it’s back to watching more submissions… You’ll be happy we did, in about 4 months.
