On what IFC Center‘s John Vanco called an “all trannie weekend” at the theater, “Transamerica” and “Hedwig & The Angry Inch” were showcase films at the site the past couple of days (the film’s directors, Duncan Tucker and John Cameron Mitchell respectively, are pictured here on Friday night, right to left).

Hoping to start a new midnight tradition in Manhattan, the IFC Center held its first midnight screenings of “Hedwig” on Friday and Saturday. In the tradition of “Rocky Horror Picture Show”, which was a mainstay at the venue when it was The Waverly, the showings included live syncronized performances by a cast of “Hedwig” characters. Prior to Friday’s showing, which drew a large, festive crowd, JCM answered questions from the audience and surprised the crowd with an early trailer for his new film, “Shortbus”. Prior to the screening, hanging out in the Waverly at IFC Center bar/cafe, he told me that he is still finishing the film, adding that while it wouldn’t be ready in time for Sundance, he is eyeing a European fest debut for the movie. Describing the project to the audience, JCM said that in the film he is trying to capture the spirit of an artist’s salon — Justin Bond (“Kiki” of “Kiki & Herb), plays a character who hosts a sexy salon filled with an array of artists — and he encouraged his fans to sign on to stage their own.

On a LiveJournal blog, one of the fans reports on a bit more of what the director had to say on Friday night.
