Jeffrey Wright 101

Jeffrey Wright 101

After seeing Syriana, I’m left with a question that comes to me every once in a while… When will Jeffrey Wright at least be nominated for an Oscar? He’s got to be just about one of the best American actors working today. Not all that familiar? Odds are, you’ve seen him a bunch but never noticed because he sneaks inside every single role. All you have to do is check him out in Basquiat, Angels in America, and this year’s Broken Flowers, and you’ll become a convert. Oh, and perhaps one of his often-forgotten (though amazing) performances happened in John Singleton’s Shaft remake. Save this one for last, and you’ll wonder why the hell his onscreen domination didn’t get more attention.

In Syriana, though, audiences see Wright playing someone he normally avoids: an average, professional guy. As a place in his canon, however, Wright’s slow burn and subtle intensity is one of many exceptional highlights in this exceptional movie. Give this man more film awards… before it just gets plain silly.
