Sundance 2006.2: Deeper Into Movies

Sundance 2006.2: Deeper Into Movies

It’s Saturday at the Sundance Film Festival, and the snow is started to fall a little heavier. The first full day of the festival was a busy one, with a lot of attention on screenings of distributor-less features like Little Miss Sunshine and Somebodies. I caught Everybody Stares, the documentary chronicling the rise to stardom for the legendary band, the Police. Compiled entirely from drummer Stewart Copeland’s Super-8 camera footage from the band’s rough early years, I found the doc entertaining. But, I’m a big fan of the band. It reminded me of 2004 music doc, Dig!, in many ways… Here’s some mPOP:

(Outside the Park City Marriott early Friday are Austin filmmakers Kyle Henry, left, and Spencer Parsons. In town to support Austin filmmakers with work in Park City, Kyle’s feature Room premiered at Sundance last year. It’s currently nominated for a couple of Independent Spirit Awards.)

(One of those Austin filmmakers premiering new work is Heather Courtney, center, here at her Slamdance premiere. She’s flanked by publicists John Murphy, left, and Jessica Edwards, right, from Murphy PR. Sorry about the blinking shot, Jessica! Meanwhile, Heather is also doing a Park City blog for indieWIRE.)

(At the fun – and crowded – Canadian Film party, documentary filmmaker AJ Schnack and Denver Film Festival head Britta Erickson slowly turned the conversation from indie film to Dora the Explorer. Both of them have their own young kids back home. Myself? Not so much.)

(The Canadian party concluded with a door prize… quite a door prize: a free trip for two to Vancouver and Whistler for a weekend. Many of us placed our business cards in a pot. When the Canadian Consulate of Denver and an official Mountie drew the winning card… some in attendance noticed it featured the big letters “SXSW” on it. But there were three of us there. After a pause, it was revealed that our own Jarod won the prize. Having the newlywed Jarod win was the perfect outcome.)

About to get deeper into movies and snow…
