SXSW 2005 Documentary Jury and Audience Award winner Cowboy Del Amor is opening in theaters as we speak. Michele Ohayon’s crowd-pleasing film is opening in theaters ahead of an April 4 release via Netlfix. And, Lorraine Ali at Newsweek puts a spotlight on it:
The magic of filmmaking was lost on Thompson during the making of “Cowboy Del Amor.” Ohayon spent a total of 70 hours filming Thompson and last year won the Grand Jury prize and Audience Award at the South by Southwest Film Festival as well as the best documentary at the Santa Fe festival.
Thompson, though, wasn’t really sure what all the fuss was about “It was a pain in the butt,” he says. “I mean, I like a few documentaries about wild animals, but basically, I think they’re boring. I wasn’t that excited about it until I went to see it at the Austin film festival. I was the most shocked person there. The response was amazing and they gave me, Ivan Thompson who’s down in Madero begging for tortillas, a standing ovation. It embarrassed me so I hid my head under my hat.” Rest assured, he’s not hiding anymore. He’s somewhere in Mexico making sure that amor is in the air.
