the best of berlin

Of the dozen or so films I have seen during five days of festival viewing here in Berlin, one movie stands out as far and away the best of the bunch: Michael Winterbottom’s “The Road to Guantanamo” (which I have just written about in my latest daily dispatch from the Berlinale).

I read nothing about the movie before going to see it, but being a fan of Winterbottom’s, I’d see any movie he makes at this point… Not even realizing the extent to which he decided to blend doc and drama, I was truly stunned by the movie and its story. Walking into the press conference a few minutes after the film ended, with two of the “Tripton Three” who had been detained at Guantanamo for more than two years, was incredible and moving.

This is a movie that many people will be buzzing about after it airs on British TV next month and if/when it makes it to U.S. theaters. In the meantime, I have a feeling that the pressure on the U.S. to account for Guantanamo will intesify.
