Spanish maverick Pedro Almodovar premiered his latest film “Volver” in Madrid yesterday, where Screen Daily reported an exuberant international press praised the film’s lighter tone and a return to an all-female cast, which includes Penelope Cruz and Carmen Maura.
The film tells a tale of troubled relations among three generations of women. So problematic are the relationships that the grandmother (Maura) comes back from the dead to resolve the family’s issues. The film opens to the public in Madrid on Friday, followed by an assured Cannes slot in May. While news reports indicated a summer U.S. release for the film, Sony Pictures Classics has shifted the North American release date to October (after what I can only assume a plum spot at the New York Film Festival, which had been the path traveled by “All About My Mother.”)
