Darn, I Don't Have an FBI File; Do You?

Much to my chagrin, I don’t have an FBI file. With all the political protests I’ve attended and angry words I’ve lobbed at this Administration, I would have thought they might be watching me. But my recent Freedom of Information request came back nil: “A search of the automated indices to our central records system files at FBI Headquarters located no records responsive to your FOIPA request,” reads the letter. Though apparently I can file an administrative appeal to the U.S. Dept. of Justice within 60 days, I have a feeling I’m clean.

If you’re interested in filing your own FOIPA request, People for the American Way has made it easy at this website. I thought it was a good idea, considering, as the website states:

“Many Americans — especially those with family and friends abroad — are wondering whether government agents have been listening to their phone conversations or reading their email. If you’re worried this has happened to you, you can use this site to help you find out.

“We can’t guarantee that the Bush administration will disclose all this information in compliance with the law, but we can help you through the process. By filing a FOIA request, you will send a strong signal that American citizens believe in the rule of law and aren’t afraid to stand up to the President when he violates the Constitution!”
