Wolfe Releasing has acquired all U.S. rights to Thom Fitzgerald‘s “3 Needles,” starring Lucy Liu, Chloe Sevigny, Stockard Channing, Sandra Oh, Olympia Dukakis and Shawn Ashmore, the company announced Wednesday. Wolfe will release the director’s cut of the film in theaters this fall, which includes 20 minutes of extra footage, including a controversial sex scene featuring Channing in a Montreal strip club and will vary in structure, content and length from the Canadian release version that premiered at the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival, according to the Bay Area-based company. “3 Needles” is a portrait of people all over the world who struggle to sustain their spirits in the face of the deadly AIDS epidemic told in three parts taking place in rural China, a plantation in South Africa, and Montreal’s porn industry. In related news, Lucy Liu will present the U.S. premiere screening of of the film at New York’s Museum of Modern Art on March 18. Liu and other actors from the film will introduce the screening and honor Dr. David Ho, a pioneering AIDS vaccine researcher who was recognized as Time Magazine’s Person of the Year (1996). For over two decades, Wolfe is one of largest exclusive distributors of gay and lesbian entertainment in North America. [Brian Brooks]
