‘Southland’ Bound

'Southland' Bound

(Have you seen THIS man? Richard Kelly, left, and Harry Knowles hang out at the Alamo Drafthouse back in October before the Austin premiere of ‘Domino,’ for which Kelly wrote the screenplay.)

One of the films I’m dying to see at Cannes is Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales. I know, I know… Richard Kelly is in the news this week over some passport/Homeland Security issues. But, besides all that, Kelly’s name is all the buzz as everyone waits with anticipation over his sophomore directorial effort. After the cult sensation that was Donnie Darko, all eyes are on the cryptic and complicated production that is Southland. Will it be his Pulp Fiction, his Snatch? In other words, will it build off on the promise of an impressive first film by doubling the pop factor and deliver a commercially viable, critically respected ensemble? Only time, and hopefully yours truly at Cannes, will tell.
