“Australia, what fresh hell is this?” says Ray Winstone’s police chief, as he tries to bring civilization to the wild outback of John Hillcoat and Nick Cave’s deliriously grungy neo-western “The Proposition.” Flies flies flies — everywhere fliies! They get the vote for best prop in a film this year: The little buzzing black monsters collect on the shirtcollars and lips of just about all the grizzled and grimy characters in the film. A revenge thriller, a music video, a family drama, a morality play, a trip into the “Heart of Darkness,” “The Proposition” is, above all, a majestic western opera. With the exception of Danny Huston (the film’s weakest link), the movie is a wonder to watch, a crazy, colorful waking nightmare that should be seen on the big screen.
