"Dorf" and "Superfly" Execs Give Birth to Two-Headed "Urban Faith-Based" Distrib

What is the world of film coming to when the creators of “Dorf on Golf” and the legal execs behind “Waist Deep” and “Superfly” join forces to distrbute “urban faith-based films” — a new niche we can thank Lionsgate and Tyler Perry for establishing. A new distribution company Sunn Allied Releasing, formed by the folks at Sunn Classic Pictures (Grizzly Adams, In Search of HIstoric Jesus) and Los Angeles law firm Bobbitt & Roberts, will release 8 to 12 financed and completed “urban and faith-based” features each year around the globe, according to a press release.

I don’t think this is what we had in mind when discussing the lack of strong films made by people of color in the industry — a commenter on my blog yesterday made this very good point, “It is one thing to say we need to see more black and latino decision makers as this may result in more black or latino films, but more of what exactly? Waist Deep? Soul Plane?” — or Diary of a Mad Black Womans?
