IFC Gets Two Argentine Films For First Take

Fabian Bielinsky‘s “The Aura” and Daniel Burman‘s “Family Law,” two acclaimed Argentine films, have been added to the slate of IFC First Take, the day and date distribution label launched this year by IFC Entertainment. The deal, with sales company Celluloid Dreams, follows the recent Cannes market acquisition of “Destricted” for the label that unveils films simultaneously in theaters and via VOD on cable television. The company is planning to release 24 films per year under the new banner.

“This continues to be an exciting time in the world of film distribution and while IFC is boldly treading this new ground, we are finding immense support from sales agents, filmmakers, producers and colleagues across the board,” said IFC Entertainment president Jonathan Sehring in a statement. “We are dedicated to reaching the broadest audience possibly and these are unique, critically acclaimed films by renowned and talented directors that might otherwise be limited by a more traditional model. Our hope is that First Take brings freedom and flexibility to the marketplace and empowers us to serve independent film beyond the boundaries of tradition.”

Bielinsky’s “The Aura” follows his recent “Nine Queens” and is described as the story of “a shy taxidermist who secretly dreams of executing the perfect robbery. On a hunting trip, his dreams are made reality when he accidentally kills a man who turns out to be a real criminal and inherits his scheme: the heist of an armored van carrying casino profits.”

While Berman’s “Family Law,” which screened at the Berlinale earlier this year, is described as telling the story of, “Ariel Perelman who works for the justice department and has a complicated relationship with his father, who dies suddenly and leaves Ariel to face life-changing decisions.” It is the follow-up to his acclaimed “Lost Embrace.”
