BritDoc 2006.3: It's All Over Now

Okay, I’m back in Austin, after my week-long trek to England for the first-ever BritDoc festival in Oxford. I think just about everyone who attended was impressed by the sheer magnitude of fun and professionalism this inagural event managed to project. In fact, it was probably too short, at just three days long. Check out fellow iW blogger Wendy Mitchell’s post, including a glimpse at the punk-rock karaoke party. Best thing I learned while attending Oxford University: don’t leave your jacket on the floor of the stage, while people decide to dance during the Beastie Boys’ “Fight For Your Right.” Oops. Here’s some final pics:

(Myself and BritDoc co-founder – and Shooting People exec – Jess Search, outside Keble College. Jess broke her foot five days prior to the festival, so she was hopping around on crutches the whole time. Photo by Cath.)

(Documentary legend Robert Drew, center foreground, chats with English docmaker Cath Le Couteur – director of SXSW 2006 short ’24 Hours in L.A.’ Drew’s wife, right, looks on.)

(The festival wrapped up well with a panel called ‘Fact vs. Fiction,’ which featured acclaimed filmmaker who have made terrific films in both the fiction and non-fiction world. Seated on the panel are: ‘My Summer of Love’ director Pawel Pawlikowski, ‘Touching the Void’ director Kevin Macdonald, ‘Leaving Las Vegas’ director Mike Figgis, and ‘Principles of Lust’ director Penny Woolcock.)

(At the BritDoc awards ceremony, Matthew Killip – far left – accepts his award for Best British Documentary Short for his film ‘Master of Reality.’ This is the category for which I was on the jury, and my fellow juror Shannon Kelley of the Sundance Institute, center, presents it to Matthew. BritDoc Festival Director Beadie Finzi, looks on.)

(What service! BritDoc programmer Maxyne Franklin drove myself and my other fellow juror, Katie Speight of More4, from Oxford back to London.)

(Austin calling.)
