My Jury Duty with Radiohead

My Jury Duty with Radiohead

Okay, that subject title is such an exaggeration, but I couldn’t resist. Next week, I’ll be at Keble College in Oxford, UK as part of the BritDoc festival. I’m sitting on a panel, but also serving on the shorts jury. My fellow shorts jurors include Katie Speight, from More4, and Shannon Kelley, from the Sundance Institute. But, then, I read Archie Thomas’ Variety brief about the festival’s feature jury. And it includes Colin Greenwood… as in, the bassist of Radiohead. Now, Greenwood is joined on the jury by filmmaker/author Jon Ronson (his book, Them, is being made into a Jack Black/Mike White/Edgar Wright film) and documentary producer Robin Gutch (Touching the Void, Party Monster doc).

I think if we have a jury-against-jury, three-on-three, half-court basketball tournament… we could dominate. Have you seen Katie Speight’s free throw, or Shannon Kelley’s lay-up? Amazing. Now, if we had a battle-of-the-bands… I think Colin Greenwood and his crew would have us beat. Especially if he calls in some favors. “The National Anthem,” from Radiohead’s epic Kid A, may have one of the best bass riffs of the last 10 years… but can he ball?
